Cybersecurity Awareness: More Important Than Ever

Article - Security
By Emily Apps|6th November 2024

With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, fostering a proactive cybersecurity culture has become more crucial than ever. At GDS Group, we remain committed to helping leaders stay ahead of the evolving security landscape.

According to IBM’s most recent cybercrime report, the global average cost of a data breach reached €4.49 million in 2024, a 10% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 70% of breached organizations agree that these incidents cause significant or very significant disruption.

This year, Cybersecurity Awareness Month focused on a simple yet vital theme: taking daily action to reduce risks when online and connected to devices.

While cybersecurity can sometimes feel complex, the 2024 CAM campaign emphasized four simple actions that everyone can take to stay safe online:

  1. Recognize and Report Phishing
Phishing attacks remain one of the most common cybersecurity threats. Recognizing tell-tale signs—such as unsolicited requests, grammatical errors, or suspicious URLs—can prevent many attacks before they begin.
  2. Use Strong Passwords
Strong, unique passwords for each account minimize risks. A password manager can help generate and store secure passwords, and creating passwords that combine upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols adds an extra layer of protection.
  3. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA adds an extra layer of security, requiring two or more verification factors to access an account. By enabling MFA wherever possible, cybercriminals find it significantly harder to access information, even if they obtain a password.
  4. Update Software Regularly
Staying up-to-date with software updates is a simple, effective way to protect devices, as these updates often contain patches for vulnerabilities. Automatic updates or regular reminders ensure all apps, operating systems, and firmware are current.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminded us all of the important role we play in keeping digital environments safe. By following these four actions, individuals contribute to a more secure online experience, benefiting themselves and their workplaces.

Cyber threats are not slowing down. From ransomware to phishing and insider threats, cybersecurity challenges are increasingly complex. As organizations continue their digital transformations, ensuring robust defenses is essential. This year’s theme, “Secure Our World,” emphasized that effective cybersecurity extends beyond technology; it requires awareness, collaboration, and action.
