While cybersecurity can sometimes feel complex, the 2024 CAM campaign emphasized four simple actions that everyone can take to stay safe online:
- Recognize and Report Phishing
Phishing attacks remain one of the most common cybersecurity threats. Recognizing tell-tale signs—such as unsolicited requests, grammatical errors, or suspicious URLs—can prevent many attacks before they begin. - Use Strong Passwords
Strong, unique passwords for each account minimize risks. A password manager can help generate and store secure passwords, and creating passwords that combine upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols adds an extra layer of protection. - Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA adds an extra layer of security, requiring two or more verification factors to access an account. By enabling MFA wherever possible, cybercriminals find it significantly harder to access information, even if they obtain a password. - Update Software Regularly
Staying up-to-date with software updates is a simple, effective way to protect devices, as these updates often contain patches for vulnerabilities. Automatic updates or regular reminders ensure all apps, operating systems, and firmware are current.
